A Flash of Whimsey

Washington, D.C. is a city steeped in history, with its iconic landmarks and political significance. However, beyond the grandeur of the monuments and government buildings, there’s a vibrant and eclectic side to the city that often goes unnoticed. One such place where this hidden essence thrives is Capitol Hill, a neighborhood where history, culture, and art blend seamlessly. Not that long ago, I had the pleasure of living in Washington, D.C. on Capitol Hill and endless opportunities to explore its people, places and things through the lens of my camera. During one of my many photographic journeys, I stumbled upon an unexpected gem - a custom-painted modern Volkswagen Beetle parked on the street; a modern classic.

Nubble Lighthouse

As a photographer with a deep appreciation for coastal landscapes, there are few places that rival the charm and beauty of Nubble Lighthouse in York, Maine. Perched atop a rocky island, surrounded by the crashing waves of the Atlantic Ocean, this iconic lighthouse has long been a favorite subject for photographers seeking to capture its timeless elegance. Recently, I had the opportunity to visit this breathtaking location and document its splendor using the Nikon Z7ii, a camera that truly excels in demanding conditions.

Family

When family comes together, particularly when it has been a while since they have spent time together, it can be magical. I had the opportunity to accompany Dani and her family for the internment of her cousin’s mother at Arlington National Cemetery. On this sole day I brought my Nikon camera and captured so many unscripted moments of sadness and joy. It was a privilege to make these images for her family as a lasting memory and tribute. One of my favorites was this image of Dani and her father Roger. They are lovely people and this image captures the essence of their love for each other and the easy way about them and father and daughter.

Everything of Value

Dubbelju Motorcycle Rentals was a special place. Located in the Mission in San Francisco, California, this motorcycle shop was a well known business dedicated to the motorcycle community - it was everything of value to bikers both beginners and experienced riders alike. On a trip back to San Francisco, I rented a Triumph T120 from them for the week. In the process, the I spend an afternoon photographing their garage and business. The owner graciously gave me access to their motorcycles and very eclectic facility. It was delightful! Parked outside their main garage door, just at the curb propped up on its wobbly kick-stand, was the scooter featured in this image. It caught my eye immediately because of the way the afternoon light made it shine and the custom part job; it was just cool. And I have to tell you, there are a lot of very cool scooters in San Francisco!

Retro Charm

Nestled along the banks of the picturesque Potomac River, the Riverside Inn in Colonial Beach, Virginia, exudes retro charm and timeless beauty. It's a place where history meets hospitality. The original hotel was built in the 1950s and has since been transformed into a modern getaway that still preserves its classic charm. Using the exceptional Fujifilm GFX100S and the versatile GF 45mm lens, I was able to capture the essence, vibrant colors and tonality of the Riverside Inn in breathtaking detail. I highly recommend experiencing the laid-back Colonial Beach for it’s many events and rich history and if you’re a photographer spending some time with this fantastic architectural subject.
